Rabbit Myth: Rabbits Should Live in Cages

Petunia can’t believe people still put rabbits in cages.

Rabbits living in hutches dates back to when the were only bred for meat. And we all know how meat animals are cared for and how they suffer.
It’s insane that we havn’t gotten further when it comes to our companion rabbits. That businesses still advertise hutches as proper rabbit housing, even that the law allow it in many countries.

We know that wild rabbits move over approximately 7 football fields every day. We know that their skeleton and muscles are made for them to be active. To jump and run. They can run up to 50 km/h. Does that sound like an animal that should be kept in a cage?

Rabbits are also highly intelligent creatures. They can solve problems (just watch them with ”intelligence toys”), they have a good memory, communicate and read both verbal and non-verbal cues from both humans and other rabbits. They learn from their environment and can adapt to it. They recognize their human’s voices and body language.

Does that sound like an animal that should live in a hutch?

Not only is it psychological torture to live in such confided space, it’s also physical torture since it breaks down their muscles and skeleton. Through Smådjurschansen, we’ve seen neglected rabbits that lived their entire lives in hutches and their body was completely broken down. Last spring, when one rescued rabbit was finally given the freedom to run in an apartmemt, her bones literally broke because she never had the chance to build muscle when spending her life in a cage. With no way of recovering, she had to be euthanized.

Please, don’t put rabbits in cages. Read up on how amazing these beautiful, clever and loving creatures are.
They deserve so much better.
