We’ve heard about all kinds of things that rabbits supposedly can or should eat. Carrots, pellets, muesli – take your pick. It can be confusing trying to find out what’s good for them and what’s not.
So let’s start with this; what do you think rabbits eat in the wild?
It’s not carrots, müseli or pellets. It’s not processed food.
It’s grasses, branches, herbs, leaves and flowers 🍀🌿🌼🌾🌳
Did you know that wild rabbits eat upwards of 20-40 different kinds of leaves, herbs, bransches and plants every day?🐇
So how can we give our furry family members the best diet?
Lots of hay. 🌾
Actually, they should always have an endless supply of hay. And it should be refilled every day.
They can also eat lots of different bransches and leaves, from apple trees, maple, willow, rowan and ash, for example.
And bushes that are rabbit safe include blueberry, raspberry, and blackberry (although this one have lots of thorns).
Some store-bought or homegrown herbs that we give in larger quantities include dill, parsley, and mint. They can also have cilantro, lemon balm, rosemary, orgegano, thyme and basil.
Different kinds of rabbit-safe flowers are clover, daisy, yarrow, lavendel, chamomile, dandelion, and rose.
Leafy greens are also important, like spinach, nettle, dandelion, strawberry leaves, plantain, lettuce (not Iceberg lettuce), kale, bok choy, pak choy, carrot tops, argula, and mache, to name a few.
Both hay, grass, herbs and bransches help keeping their teeth from overgrowing.😬
Rabbits teeth never stops growing, so it’s important both because of that and their overall health that they have a correct diet.
Remember that all new food should be introduced carefully, since rabbits have a sensitive digestive system.
And do make sure their food is organic and not treated with any toxins.
