Did You Know?

Did you know this about rabbits?

Rabbits are amazing creatures. Their wide range of behaviors and characteristics make them unique. Since they’re one of the most misunderstood animals, here’s a list of interesting facts about these furry friends:

  1. Communication Experts: Did you know that rabbits are highly expressive communicators? They use a variety of body language, including thumping their hind legs, to convey emotions and warnings to other rabbits.
  2. Hop to It: Rabbits are incredible jumpers and can leap up to 36 inches in a single bound. Their powerful hind legs allow them to cover significant distances quickly, aiding in their escape from predators.
  3. Bunny Teeth Never Stop Growing: Rabbit teeth, also known as incisors, grow continuously throughout their lives. Chewing on hay and other fibrous foods helps wear down their teeth and prevents dental issues. Herbs and branches are great, too.
  4. 180-Degree Vision: Rabbits have nearly 360-degree panoramic vision, with a small blind spot in front of their nose and behind their head. This wide field of view helps them detect predators from almost any angle. However, rabbits that have been bred to have long ears will not have as good vision as those with normal, ”upwards” ears.
  5. Social Butterflies: Contrary to the stereotype of the solitary rabbit, these furry creatures are social animals. In the wild, they live in groups called colonies, providing each other with companionship. There truly is safety in numbers. And did you know it’s even illegal in some countries to have lone rabbits? It’s because companionship of their own kind is essential for their wellbeing.
  6. Speedy Reproduction: Rabbits are known for their prolific breeding. A female rabbit, or doe, can become pregnant shortly after giving birth. With a short gestation period of about 30 days, a single pair of rabbits can produce several litters in a year. That’s why it’s so important to spay and neuter them.
  7. Unique Purring: Did you know that rabbits can purr like cats? When content and relaxed, they emit a soft, rhythmic purring sound from their teeth shattering. This gentle noise is a sign of happiness and comfort. But beware – they can make the same sound when they’re hurting.
  8. Selective Hearing: Normal rabbits have excellent hearing, and their ears can rotate independently to detect sounds from different directions. They can pick up even high-pitched sounds, which helps them stay alert to potential threats. Rabbits bred to have hanging ears, the lop breed, will often be deaf, however.
  9. Binky Bonanza: Ever seen a rabbit perform joyful acrobatics? That’s called a ”binky” – a spontaneous leap in the air, often with a twist or a kick. Binkying is a sign of a happy and content rabbit. It’s often accompanied by zooms – a very fast run.
  10. Essential Grooming: Rabbits are meticulous groomers and spend a significant amount of time cleaning themselves. In the wild, this grooming behavior helps reduce scent and keeps them less noticeable to predators. This is why it’s essential to brush your rabbits to remove excess fur so they don’t ingest it and cause blockage.
