Why not?
Rabbits live in herds in the wild, and there aren’t always only one male living with several females. There are also several bonded pairs of male+male working very well, or groups with several males+females.
So where does this myth come from?
Not long ago, rabbits were only bred for their meat. They were kept in horrifying small spaces to bring up as many of them as possible, as fast as possible💔
Having unspayed or unneutered rabbits together is highly inadvisable, but having unneutered males together in small spaces was even worse. They would, naturally, be territorial and defensive. This lead to them hurting each other. Just imagine that kind of stress😢
Rabbits shouldn’t live in small spaces. They need lots of space and are clever creatures.
They need to live with at least one other rabbit friend (in some countries it’s even illegal to have rabbits alone)🐇🐇
They need to be spayed or neutered, both for their own wellbeing (less hormones), but also to minimize the risk of several illnesses that unspayed or unneutered rabbits are almost guaranteed to get.
So why are so many people still advising against male+male pairs or groups?🧐
Not only does this thinking date back to the meat rabbit-breeding days, but the few studies that have been done are with a mix of both neutered and unneutered male rabbits.
Meaning, not all male rabbits in the study were neutered. Also, many people don’t know how to properly bond their bunnies, so failed bonding attempts due to inaccurate bonding techniques add to this statistic.
Of course that will lead to the conclusion that male rabbits shouldn’t be kept together.🚫
Instead of relying on information from people just throwing this out there, on social media or in articles, ask them where they got their information from.
Ask reputable rescues what their experiences are with bonding male rabbits.
Like with all rabbits, I’m sure the answer of whether or not they will bond is about their personality.
When all the rabbits involved are spayed or neutered, there’s no reason male rabbits can’t be friends.
And as always, if you’re unsure about the bonding process, do seek professional help🐰💙🐰
